Den nederlandske filosofen, politikeren og historikeren Luuk van Middelaar har vært rådgiver og taleskriver for Europarådets president Herman Van Rompuy siden 2010 og stod blant annet bak takketalen da EU ble tildelt Nobels fredspris i 2012. Hans utgivelse The Passage to Europe. How a Continent Became a Union ble hedret med den europeiske bokprisen 2012 og ser nærmere på dynamikken og spenningen i EU-prosjektet fra unionens etablering og fram til i dag. Nå foredrar Middelaar om EUs historiske og framtidige betydning.
Forfatter og Brageprisvinner Simen Ekern er bokaktuell med Europeere, som først og fremst tar for seg de politiske konsekvensene av den økonomiske krisen. Han har fulgt utviklingen i Europa tett både fra Brüssel og Roma, der han er bosatt nå. Før Middelaars foredrag vil han gi en utlendig nordmanns perspektiv på Europa-debatten og ideen om Europa.

The return of politics
Lecture by Luuk van Middelaar
How does the European Union respond to the economic crisis, and how is the union changed by the challenges faced by Europe?
The Dutch philosopher, politician and historian Luuk van Middelaar has worked as an advisor and speech writer for the President of the European
Council, Herman Van Rompuy, since 2010, and was the author of the acceptance speech when the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012. His book The Passage to Europe. How a Continent Became a Union, winner of the 2012 European Book Prize, takes a closer look at the dynamics and
tension in the European project from the birth of the union and up to the present day. Today, Middelaar gives lectures on the historical and future importance of the European Union.
Critically acclaimed writer Simen Ekern has recently published Europeere, a book dealing with the political implications of the economic crisis. He has followed the development in Europe closely, both from Brussels and Rome, where he is currently living. Prior to Middelaar’s lecture, he will offer an expatriate Norwegian’s perspective on the European debate and the idea of Europe.
